Joplin tornado

The Joplin tornado was a devastating EF5 tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri, on May 22, 2011. Forming west of the city at approximately 5:34 p.m. CDT, it rapidly expanded to a peak width of nearly a mile as it moved through southern Joplin. It also impacted Jasper and Newton counties. The tornado remained on the ground for 38 minutes, covering a total distance of 21.62 miles before dissipating at 6:12 p.m. CDT. The Joplin tornado was part of a larger sequence of tornadic activity in late May and caused catastrophic damage.
