He represented Auckland, the North Island, and Auckland Pākehā, demonstrating his skill at the provincial level. During World War II, he played for various rugby teams in the Middle East while serving. Smith was associated with the North Shore Albions club. He comes from a family with a strong rugby background, his brother Dick Smith also represented New Zealand, and they were both nephews of prominent sportsman George Smith.
