Alabama State University, founded in 1867 in Montgomery, Alabama, is a historically Black public university. Established during the Reconstruction era, it began as a normal school with the mission of training African American teachers for segregated schools. It was one of 23 established for this purpose and among about 180 total normal schools. Over time, it evolved into a state college and eventually a state university. ASU is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

1928: Lincoln Normal School Becomes a Four-Year Institution
