Ornithologist Louis Lefebvre introduced a method to assess avian intelligence in February 2005 by observing their feeding innovations. This method identified hawks as one of the most intelligent bird species.
In 2005, Lerner and Mindell suggested reorganizing the Buteoninae subfamily. They proposed moving eagles and sea-eagles to separate subfamilies, Aquilinae and Haliaaetinae, leaving only buteonine hawks and buzzards in Buteoninae.
