Union Pacific Railroad is a major Class I freight railroad operating in the western two-thirds of the United States. With over 32,200 miles of routes and 8,300 locomotives, it is the second largest railroad in the U.S., primarily hauling freight. Union Pacific, along with BNSF, forms a duopoly on transcontinental freight rail lines in the Western, Midwestern, and West South Central U.S.
