November 20, 1980: Lake Peigneur Drilling Mishap

On November 20, 1980, a short-lived whirlpool formed in Lake Peigneur, Louisiana, after underwater drillers accidentally breached a salt mine. The lake drained into the mine, causing a sinkhole that destroyed five houses, nineteen barges, eight tug boats, oil rigs, a mobile home, trees, land, and most of a botanical garden. The adjacent settlement of Jefferson Island was reduced in area by 10%, and a crater was left behind.

June 2015: Lake Texoma Intake Vortex

In early June 2015, an intake vortex, or artificial whirlpool, formed in Lake Texoma on the Oklahoma-Texas border. This occurred near the dam's floodgates while the lake was being drained from its highest level. The Army Corps of Engineers expected the whirlpool to dissipate by late July as the lake returned to normal seasonal levels.
