Carolyn McCarthy was an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative for New York's 4th congressional district from 1997 to 2015. As a member of the Democratic Party, she was known for her advocacy on gun control issues, which stemmed from a personal tragedy when her husband was killed and her son severely injured in a mass shooting on the Long Island Rail Road in 1993. This event propelled her into political activism and ultimately led to her election to Congress, where she focused on legislation related to gun safety and healthcare.
