In 2013, Darnell Nurse was drafted seventh overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL Entry Draft and subsequently signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the team. He was then returned to the Greyhounds for the 2013–14 season.

2014: Nurse joins Oilers

In 2014, Darnell Nurse made the Oilers' opening night roster and made his NHL debut on October 14 in a game against the Los Angeles Kings. After two games, he was sent back to the Greyhounds on October 17.

2015: Nurse joins Bakersfield Condors

Darnell Nurse began the 2015-16 season with the Oilers' new AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. After six games, he was recalled to the Oilers and scored his first NHL goal on October 27.

2015: Wins gold at World Junior Championship

In 2015, Darnell Nurse won gold with Canada at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship and was named one of Canada's top three players and the player of the match.

March 10, 2016: Nurse Suspended

On March 10, 2016, Darnell Nurse was suspended three games for "serving as the aggressor" during an altercation with San Jose Sharks defenceman Roman Polák.

December 12, 2016: Nurse undergoes ankle surgery
