Darnell Nurse is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman currently playing for the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL, where he serves as an alternate captain. He was drafted by the Oilers seventh overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and has become a key player on their blue line.
On February 4, 1995, Darnell Nurse was born. He is now a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman.
In 2011, Darnell Nurse was selected third overall by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the OHL Priority Selection.
Following the 2012–13 season, Darnell Nurse was awarded the Bobby Smith Trophy for OHL Scholastic Player of the Year.
During the 2012–13 season Darnell Nurse was also an invited participant at the 2013 CHL Top Prospects Game.
In 2013, Darnell Nurse was drafted seventh overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL Entry Draft and subsequently signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the team. He was then returned to the Greyhounds for the 2013–14 season.
In 2014, Darnell Nurse made the Oilers' opening night roster and made his NHL debut on October 14 in a game against the Los Angeles Kings. After two games, he was sent back to the Greyhounds on October 17.
Darnell Nurse began the 2015-16 season with the Oilers' new AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. After six games, he was recalled to the Oilers and scored his first NHL goal on October 27.
On March 10, 2016, Darnell Nurse was suspended three games for "serving as the aggressor" during an altercation with San Jose Sharks defenceman Roman Polák.
On December 12, 2016, it was announced that Darnell Nurse underwent successful ankle surgery and would be sidelined for up to 12 weeks.
On February 26, 2017, Darnell Nurse returned to the team after recovering from ankle surgery.
On April 12, 2018, Darnell Nurse and teammates Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins were named to Team Canada's 2018 IIHF World Championship roster.
On September 17, 2018, Darnell Nurse re-signed with the Oilers for a two-year contract extension worth $6.4 million.
In 2018, Darnell Nurse's cousin, Sarah Nurse, won a silver medal at the Winter Olympics with the Canadian national ice hockey team.
On October 1, 2019, Darnell Nurse, alongside Leon Draisaitl, was named an alternate captain for the Oilers.
On February 10, 2020, Darnell Nurse signed a two-year, $11.2 million contract extension with the Oilers.
On August 6, 2021, Darnell Nurse signed an eight-year, $74 million extension with the Oilers.
In 2022, Darnell Nurse's cousin, Sarah Nurse, won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics with the Canadian national ice hockey team.
