A funeral director, also known as an undertaker or mortician, is a licensed professional who manages funeral arrangements. Their responsibilities often include embalming, burial or cremation, and organizing the funeral ceremony. They may also dress, casket, and cosmetize the deceased, provided they have the proper licenses. Funeral directors can be employed by a funeral home or work independently.

2003: Corporate Ownership of Funeral Homes in the US

In 2003, a significant portion, 15 percent, of corporately owned funeral homes in the US were under the ownership of three major corporations. Most morticians were employed by smaller, independent, family-operated funeral homes.
