A funeral director, also called an undertaker or mortician, is licensed in funeral arranging and embalming. Their duties include preparing the deceased for burial or cremation, which may involve embalming, dressing, casketing, and cosmetology. They also arrange funeral ceremonies. Funeral directors can work for funeral homes or as independent contractors.
In 2003, statistics showed that 15 percent of corporately owned funeral homes in the US were owned by one of three corporations. Most morticians work in small family-run funeral homes.
