Touchback

In American football, a touchback occurs when the ball becomes dead on or behind a team's own goal line due to momentum provided by the opposing team. This momentum can result from a kick, pass, fumble, or batting the ball. Critically, the opposing team must not have had possession when the ball became dead. A touchback is not a play itself, but the consequence of actions during a play. When a touchback is awarded, the defending team receives possession of the ball at their own 25-yard line, providing them a significant advantage in field position.
