USS Stockdale (DDG-106)

USS Stockdale (DDG-106) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer in the U.S. Navy, named after Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale. Authorized in 2002, it was built by Bath Iron Works and christened by Stockdale's widow in 2008. Delivered to the Navy in September 2008, the ship transited the Panama Canal in March 2009 with Stockdale's family aboard. USS Stockdale was officially commissioned on April 18, 2009, at Port Hueneme.

May 2008: Stockdale Christened

On May 2008, USS Stockdale was christened by Sybil Stockdale, the widow of Admiral James Bond Stockdale.

September 2008: Stockdale Delivered to the Navy

In September 2008, USS Stockdale was delivered to the Navy.

March 2009: Panama Canal Transit

In March 2009, USS Stockdale transited the Panama Canal. Admiral Stockdale's youngest son and grandchildren joined the ship for the trip.

April 2009: USS Stockdale Commissioned

On April 2009, USS Stockdale was commissioned at Port Hueneme.

November 2010: Deployment in United States Seventh Fleet Area of Responsibility

In November 2010, USS Stockdale started an eight-month deployment in the United States Seventh Fleet Area of Responsibility.

July 2011: End of Deployment

In July 2011, USS Stockdale concluded her eight-month deployment in the United States Seventh Fleet Area of Responsibility, having made port calls at various locations including Guam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, and South Korea.

July 2012: Participation in RIMPAC 2012

In July 2012, USS Stockdale participated in the naval exercise RIMPAC 2012, which included maneuvers near the PMRF in Hawaii.

July 2021: Departure from San Diego

In July 2021, USS Stockdale departed from San Diego and joined Carrier Strike Group One.

January 2022: Discovery of Sonar Dome Damage

On 21 January 2022, while inport Sasebo investigating a fuel tank crack, it was discovered that the Stockdale’s sonar dome was damaged. Repairs were subsequently made in Yokosuka drydock.

July 2022: Arrival at San Diego

After repairs, in July 2022, USS Stockdale arrived back at San Diego.

August 2024: Arrival at Port of Colombo

On 22 August 2024, USS Stockdale arrived at the Port of Colombo in Colombo, Sri Lanka, for a replenishment visit.

September 2024: Attack by Houthi Rebels in the Red Sea

On 27 September 2024, while transiting the Red Sea with USS Spruance and USS Indianapolis, USS Stockdale was attacked by roughly two dozen missiles and drones launched by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. All projectiles were intercepted or missed their targets.

November 2024: Second Attack by Houthi Rebels

On 11 November 2024, the Houthis attacked the USS Spruance and USS Stockdale again, launching eight drones, five ballistic missiles and three cruise missiles. All projectiles were shot down, with the Stockdale using its five-inch gun to down one of the drones while transiting the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. There were no damages or casualties.

December 2024: Attack by Houthis While Escorting Merchant Vessels

On 1 December 2024, while escorting three merchant vessels in the Gulf of Aden, the USS Stockdale and USS O'Kane were attacked by Houthis with three ballistic missiles, three drones, and one cruise missile. All projectiles were intercepted, and there were no damages or casualties.

2024: High Combat Participation

During her 2024-2025 deployment to the 5th Fleet, the USS Stockdale participated in more combat than any other U.S. Navy ship since the end of World War II.
