USS Stockdale (DDG-106)

USS Stockdale (DDG-106) is a United States Navy Arleigh Burke-class Aegis guided missile destroyer, named in honor of Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale. Authorized in 2002, she was built by Bath Iron Works and christened on 10 May 2008 by Stockdale's widow, Sybil. The ship was delivered to the Navy on 30 September 2008. In March 2009, Stockdale transited the Panama Canal, with Admiral Stockdale's family aboard. The USS Stockdale was officially commissioned on 18 April 2009 at Port Hueneme.

September 2002: Authorization of USS Stockdale

On 13 September 2002, USS Stockdale (DDG-106) was authorized. This Arleigh Burke-class (Flight IIA) Aegis guided missile destroyer was built by Bath Iron Works.

2005: Death of James Bond Stockdale

In 2005, Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale, the namesake of the USS Stockdale (DDG-106), passed away.

May 2008: Christening of USS Stockdale

On 10 May 2008, USS Stockdale was christened by Sybil Stockdale, the widow of Admiral James Bond Stockdale.

September 2008: Delivery to the Navy

On 30 September 2008, USS Stockdale was delivered to the Navy.

March 2009: Transit of the Panama Canal

In March 2009, USS Stockdale transited the Panama Canal. Admiral Stockdale's youngest son and grandchildren joined the ship for the trip.

On 18 April 2009, USS Stockdale was commissioned at Port Hueneme.

November 2010: Deployment to the United States Seventh Fleet Area of Responsibility

In November 2010, USS Stockdale began an eight-month deployment in the United States Seventh Fleet Area of Responsibility.

July 2011: End of deployment

In July 2011, USS Stockdale concluded an eight-month deployment in the United States Seventh Fleet Area of Responsibility.

July 2012: Participation in RIMPAC 2012

In July 2012, the USS Stockdale participated in the naval exercise RIMPAC 2012, including maneuvers in the Kaulakahi Channel near the PMRF.

July 2021: Departure from San Diego

In July 2021, USS Stockdale departed San Diego and joined Carrier Strike Group One.

January 2022: Discovery of Sonar Dome Damage

On 21 January 2022, while investigating a fuel tank crack in port Sasebo, damage to the USS Stockdale's sonar dome was discovered. Repairs were subsequently made in Yokosuka drydock.

July 2022: Arrival at San Diego

On 15 July 2022, USS Stockdale arrived at San Diego after repairs were completed.

August 2024: Arrival at the Port of Colombo

On 22 August 2024, USS Stockdale arrived at the Port of Colombo in Colombo, Sri Lanka, for a replenishment visit. The vessel was scheduled to depart on 23 August 2024.

September 2024: Attack in the Red Sea

On the morning of 27 September 2024, while transiting the Red Sea, the USS Stockdale, along with the USS Spruance and USS Indianapolis, was attacked by approximately two dozen missiles and drones launched by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. All projectiles were intercepted or missed, resulting in no damage.

November 2024: Houthi Attack

On 11 November 2024, the USS Spruance and USS Stockdale were attacked again by Houthis, who launched eight drones, five ballistic missiles, and three cruise missiles at the destroyers. The destroyers shot down all projectiles, suffering no damage or casualties. The Stockdale used its five-inch gun to shoot down one drone while transiting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

December 2024: Houthi Attack in the Gulf of Aden

On 1 December 2024, while escorting three merchant vessels in the Gulf of Aden, the USS Stockdale and USS O'Kane were attacked by Houthis with three ballistic missiles, three drones, and one cruise missile. All projectiles were intercepted, and there were no damages or casualties.

2024: Extensive Combat Participation

During her 2024–25 deployment to 5th fleet, Stockdale participated in more combat than any other U.S. Navy ship since the end of World War II.
