First held in 2019, it marked AEW's inaugural PPV and event, making it their flagship show. Double or Nothing, along with All Out, Full Gear, and Revolution, is considered one of AEW's "Big Four" PPVs, representing their most significant quarterly events.

On March 27, 2024, it was announced that Double or Nothing would return to the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 26, 2024, marking the event's return to its original venue after five years.
