Al Golden is an American football coach currently working as the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. Prior to this role, he held head coaching positions at Temple University from 2006 to 2010 and the University of Miami from 2011 to 2015. Golden also played tight end during his own football career. His extensive experience in both coaching and playing contributes to his expertise within the sport.
Al Golden graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a pre-law degree in 1991.
In December 1996, Al Golden received a master's degree in sports psychology from the University of Virginia.
Al Golden was honored with induction into the Jersey Shore Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
On October 10, 2015, the Miami Hurricanes, coached by Al Golden, played against the Florida State Seminoles. Prior to the game, there was significant fan discontent with Golden's performance as coach, including anti-Golden banners and even fundraising efforts by opposing fans to further mock him. These fundraising efforts were ultimately redirected to charity. On game day, mock "Missing Persons" posters were displayed around Tallahassee, highlighting the perceived decline of the Hurricanes program.
On February 1, 2016, Al Golden was appointed as the tight ends coach for the Detroit Lions, marking a new chapter in his coaching career.
After serving as the tight ends coach for two seasons, Al Golden transitioned to the role of linebackers coach for the Detroit Lions on February 7, 2018.
Al Golden's tenure with the Detroit Lions ended on December 31, 2019, when he was fired from his position as linebackers coach.
On January 20, 2020, Al Golden was hired by the Cincinnati Bengals as their linebackers coach.
On February 16, 2022, Al Golden took on the role of defensive coordinator at Notre Dame under head coach Marcus Freeman.
In 2023, the Notre Dame defense, led by Al Golden, achieved significant success, ranking fifth in the nation in yards allowed.
