Before joining ESPN in 2010, Windhorst covered the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Akron Beacon Journal from 2003 to 2008 and later for The Plain Dealer starting in October 2008. His move to ESPN coincided with LeBron James' departure from the Cavaliers to the Miami Heat.
