Daniel Caesar, born Ashton Dumar Norwill Simmonds, is a Canadian singer and songwriter. He gained initial recognition through independent releases of EPs like Praise Break (2014) and Pilgrim's Paradise (2015). His debut album, Freudian (2017), earned him three Grammy nominations. He followed up with Case Study 01 in 2019. A significant milestone in his career was featuring on Justin Bieber's hit song "Peaches" (2021), which became his first number-one song on the Billboard Hot 100. His third studio album, Never Enough (2023), marked his debut under Republic Records.
In 2014, Daniel Caesar released his debut EP, Praise Break. He had connected with producers Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett and began writing and recording the EP. It was listed as No. 19 on the "20 Best R&B Albums of 2014" by Rolling Stone and a top project of 2014 by Noisey Canada.
In 2015, Daniel Caesar's career gained notability with the release of his second EP, Pilgrim's Paradise. While not immediately commercially successful, the album received positive critical acclaim, and tracks like "Streetcar" and his cover of Kanye West's "Street Lights" became fan favorites.
Since 2015, Daniel Caesar has worked closely with producers Matthew Burnett and Jordan Evans, with whom he co-founded his independent label, Golden Child Recordings, and has co-produced almost all of his music with them.
On August 25, 2017, Daniel Caesar released his debut album Freudian, which included the singles "Get You", "We Find Love", and "Blessed". The album featured artists like Kali Uchis, H.E.R., Syd, and Charlotte Day Wilson and was a shortlisted finalist for the 2018 Polaris Music Prize.
On June 28, 2019, Daniel Caesar released his sophomore studio album, Case Study 01. The album featured guest appearances from Brandy, Pharrell Williams, John Mayer, Sean Leon and Jacob Collier and was supported by the single, "Love Again" with Brandy.
On March 19, 2021, Daniel Caesar appeared alongside Giveon on Justin Bieber's "Peaches" from Justice. The track became Caesar's first to top both the Canadian Hot 100 and the Billboard Hot 100.
On April 7, 2023, Daniel Caesar released his third studio album, Never Enough, through Republic Records.
In October 2024, Daniel Caesar appeared on Tyler, the Creator's eighth studio album Chromakopia, providing vocals for five tracks on the album, including opening track "St. Chroma" and "Tomorrow", which Caesar co-wrote and performed bass on.
