Jack Douglas Teixeira was born in December 2001. His stepfather is a retired master sergeant in the United States Air Force and his family has ties to military service. His mother worked for a non-profit organization supporting military veterans.
Upon graduating from high school, Jack Teixeira joined the 102nd Intelligence Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard as a Cyber Transport Systems journeyman in September 2019. He was stationed at Otis Air National Guard Base in Cape Cod.
In 2020, Jack Teixeira graduated from Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School. However, he missed his graduation ceremony to attend United States Air Force Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.
In July 2022, Jack Teixeira was promoted to the rank of airman first class. He held a Top Secret security clearance and received an Air Force Achievement Medal.
By October 2022, Jack Teixeira was alleged to have regularly shared classified information on a Discord server called "Thug Shaker Central." He reportedly transcribed and shared documents from his office, acting as the chatroom administrator.
In January 2023, Jack Teixeira was admonished by his supervisors for taking notes on classified materials and viewing information not needed for his job. These actions were part of a pattern of misconduct that contributed to his later charges.
In February 2023, a member of the 'Thug Shaker Central' Discord server allegedly posted dozens of pictures of classified documents to another server, leading to further dissemination. The New York Times later reported on the leak, which was linked back to Jack Teixeira's online profile.
In April 2023, following an investigation into the unauthorized removal and disclosure of classified Pentagon documents, Jack Teixeira was arrested by FBI agents. He was charged with unauthorized retention and transmission of national defense information, violating the Espionage Act of 1917, and unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents.
On March 2024, Jack Teixeira pleaded guilty to six counts related to the willful retention and transmission of national defense information.
On November 12, 2024, Jack Teixeira was sentenced to fifteen years in prison following his guilty plea to charges related to the unauthorized handling of national defense information.
