James Welling

James Welling is an American artist, photographer, and educator currently residing in New York City. His artistic journey began at Carnegie-Mellon University, where he studied drawing under Gandy Brodie, and at the University of Pittsburgh, where he explored modern dance. He later transferred to the California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts) in 1971, earning both a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. in Art. During his time at Cal Arts, he was mentored by notable figures such as John Baldessari, Wolfgang Stoerchle, and Jack Goldstein, shaping his artistic perspective and practice.
