History of Lake Chelan in Timeline
Lake Chelan, located in north-central Washington state, is a long, narrow lake formed by glacial activity, resembling a fjord. Stretching over 50 miles, it reaches depths exceeding 6,600 feet below nearby mountain peaks. Before the construction of the Lake Chelan Dam in 1927, it was the largest natural lake in Washington. The dam's completion raised the lake's elevation by 21 feet, establishing its current maximum capacity elevation of 1,100 feet. Today, Lake Chelan is known for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities.
