A league cup is a cup competition in sports, especially association football, limited to teams within a specific league. The first national association football tournament named "League Cup" was the Scottish League Cup, established in 1946–47. However, the League of Ireland Shield was the first national league-only tournament of its kind and was later replaced by the League of Ireland Cup in 1983.
