In 1991, Paulo Costa was born to Carlos Roberto and Maria Augusta. He grew up in Contagem, Brazil, with his older brother, Carlos Costa, who later became a mixed martial artist and one of Paulo's coaches.
Paulo Costa made his professional MMA debut in February 2012 in Brazil. With his mother's financial support, he pursued his martial arts career.
On March 11, 2017, Paulo Costa made his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 106, defeating Garreth McLellan via TKO in the first round. This victory earned him his first Performance of the Night award.
