The Presidents Cup is a golf tournament where a team of male golfers from the United States competes against a team of male golfers from around the world, excluding Europe. A similar tournament, the Ryder Cup, pits the United States against Europe.
The first ever Presidents Cup was held in 1994.
The Presidents Cup was extended from three days to four days in 2000.
Due to the September 11 attacks, the 2001 Ryder Cup was cancelled, causing the Presidents Cup to shift to odd-numbered years.
The 2003 Presidents Cup ended in a tie after the tiebreaker match was stopped due to darkness. Captains Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus agreed that both teams would share the Cup.
In 2005, a new rule was implemented for singles matches. Matches tied at the end of 18 holes would be extended until a winner was decided. This rule was in effect until 2013 but was never needed.
Prior to 2005, a tie-breaker format was used in the Presidents Cup. However, this format was changed starting in 2005.
The rule extending tied singles matches was removed in 2013.
In 2015, the format for the Presidents Cup was changed to include nine foursome doubles matches, nine fourball doubles matches, and 12 singles matches.
The Presidents Cup reverted back to being held in even-numbered years following the postponement of the 2020 Ryder Cup due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2024, the Presidents Cup will be held at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada from September 24-29.
