2022: First Career Start
In 2022, Preston Stone started his first career game, completing 11 of 17 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown in a victory over Tulsa. He ended the 2022 season with 28 completed passes out of 48 attempts for 388 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and 63 rushing yards with two touchdowns.
2023: Successful Season and Ankle Injury
In 2023, Preston Stone led SMU to a 10-2 record, passing for 3,197 yards, completing 206 of 344 passes with six interceptions. He started every game of the 2023 season but suffered an ankle injury during SMU's 59-14 victory over Navy, preventing him from playing in the AAC Championship Game against Tulane.
September 10, 2024: Announcement of Starting Quarterback
On September 10, 2024, SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee announced that Kevin Jennings would be the starting quarterback for the Mustangs. This announcement occurred after Stone and Jennings had split playing time during the first three games of the season.
