A prince is a male ruler or a male member of a monarch's family. It's also a hereditary title of nobility in some European countries. The female equivalent is a princess. The word "prince" originates from the Latin word "princeps," meaning "the first, foremost."

1947: Dissolution of the Indian Empire

In 1947, the British Indian Empire was dissolved, ending the era of British colonial rule in India.

1949: Accession of Princely States

Between 1947 and 1949, the Princely States, ruled by Indian princes, acceded to either the newly formed Union of India or the Dominion of Pakistan.
