UMG's deal with AI song generator Udio raised questions from Irving Azoff and the Music Artists Coalition. Udio allowed temporary downloads after a settlement upset users, highlighting concerns around AI in music.
In December 2023, Udio was created by a team of researchers under the name of Uncharted Labs, including CEO David Ding, Conor Durkan, Charlie Nash, Yaroslav Ganin, and Andrew Sanchez. The venture received seed funding, including backing from Andreessen Horowitz, UnitedMasters, musicians like will.i.am, Tay Keith, and Common, and others, valuing Udio at $10 million.
In December 2023, Udio was founded by former Google DeepMind researchers, led by CEO David Ding. The project received financial backing from Andreessen Horowitz and musicians such as will.i.am and Common. While praised for realistic vocals, concerns arose about potential copyright issues in its training data.
On April 10, 2024, the free beta version of Udio, an AI model that generates music from text prompts, was released publicly. The model generates both vocals and instrumentation. Users have the option to subscribe to unlock additional features like audio inpainting.
As of April 2024, Udio bases song creation on text prompts specifying genre, lyrics, story, and artist influences. It uses a large language model (LLM) for lyrics but the exact music generation process is undisclosed. The program generates two song versions from which users can remix. Songs begin as 30-second pieces, extendable in increments, and paid subscribers gain access to audio inpainting.
In April 2024, Udio was publicly released in its beta phase on the Udio website after a closed beta period. As of April 2024, users can generate 600 songs per month for free. Sanchez describes Udio as enabling musicians to create and monetize their music.
In June 2024, a lawsuit was filed against Udio and Suno by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), alleging widespread copyright infringement of sound recordings. The lawsuit aims to prevent the companies from training on copyrighted music and seeks damages of up to $150,000 per infringement.
In August 2024, the song "Verknallt in einen Talahon (In Love with a Talahon)", generated with Udio by Austrian producer Butterbro, became the first AI-generated song to enter the German Top 50 charts.
In October 2025, the copyright lawsuit from Universal Music Group against Udio was settled with licensing agreements. Udio agreed to launch a platform trained only with "authorized and licensed music".
