West Virginia is a mountainous U.S. state located in the Southern and Mid-Atlantic regions. It is bordered by Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. With a population of 1,769,979, it ranks as the 10th-smallest state by area and the 12th-least populous. Charleston is the capital and most populous city. The state notably lacks navigable access to either the Great Lakes or the Atlantic Ocean.
