Alabama Power Company, based in Birmingham, Alabama, provides electricity to 1.4 million customers across southern Alabama. It operates appliance stores and is a subsidiary of the Southern Company, a major U.S. electricity generator. As one of the Southern Company's four utilities, Alabama Power plays a significant role in the region's energy infrastructure and service.

1999: EPA Enforcement Action

In 1999, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initiated an enforcement action against Alabama Power under the Clean Air Act.

2006: Pollution Control Upgrade Agreement

In 2006, Alabama Power agreed to invest over $200 million to upgrade pollution controls as part of a settlement with the EPA. Also in 2006, the Southern Environmental Law Center was involved in a case against Duke Energy that was appealed to the Supreme Court.

2017: Surveillance of Southern Company CEO

In 2017, Matrix hired a private investigator to surveil Tom Fanning, the Southern Company CEO, near his residence.

2021: Largest Carbon Dioxide Emitter

As of 2021, Alabama Power's James H. Miller Jr. Electric Generating Plant was the largest single emitter of carbon dioxide in the United States.
