Alcorn State University, founded in 1871, holds the distinction of being the first black land grant college in the United States. The "World Renowned Golden Girls" (GGs), the first danceline associated with a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) marching band, was established in 1968. As the pioneering danceline without twirling batons, they are recognized as "The Mother of HBCU dancelines."
In 1974, Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College officially became Alcorn State University. This change, enacted by Governor William L.
