Alcorn State University

Alcorn State University, founded in 1871, holds the distinction of being the first black land grant college in the United States. Located near Lorman, Mississippi, this public institution is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. 1968: Founding of the "World Renowned Golden Girls"

The "World Renowned Golden Girls" (GGs), the first danceline associated with a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) marching band, was established in 1968. As the pioneering danceline without twirling batons, they are recognized as "The Mother of HBCU dancelines."

1974: Renaming to Alcorn State University

In 1974, Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College officially became Alcorn State University. This change, enacted by Governor William L. Waller through House Bill 298, reflected the institution's expanding academic offerings and its transition into a more comprehensive university with graduate programs.

1994: Limited National Recognition

In 1994, Jay Searcy from the Philadelphia Inquirer observed that Alcorn State University received limited national recognition outside of its football team, alumni like Medgar Evers, and occasional Olympic athletes. This situation changed when Steve McNair's athletic achievements brought increased attention to the university.

2010: First Appearance as a CDP

Alcorn State University was first recognized as a Census Designated Place (CDP) in the 2010 US Census.

2019: Fall Enrollment

During the fall semester of 2019, Alcorn State University had a student enrollment of 3,523.

2020: MacKenzie Scott's Donation

In 2020, philanthropist MacKenzie Scott made a historic $25 million donation to Alcorn State University, marking the largest single gift in the institution's history.
