Ana Betancourt (1832-1869) was a Cuban patriot and revolutionary figure who played a prominent role in Cuba's struggle for independence from Spain. A fervent advocate for women's rights and the abolition of slavery, she famously renounced her privileged background and called upon Cuban women to join the fight for freedom and equality. Her powerful speeches and unwavering commitment to the cause made her a symbol of Cuban resistance and a national heroine, solidifying her place in Cuban history.
In 1901, at the age of 69, Ana Betancourt was about to return to Cuba but contracted fulminating bronchopneumonia and died before she could begin her journey.
In 1978, Ana Betancourt's remains were sent to Cuba and buried in the pantheon of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, in the Cemetery Colón in Havana.
In 1979, the Order of Ana Betancourt medal was officially sanctioned as a state award in Cuba, given to Cuban women demonstrating revolutionary merit and anti-imperialist fidelity.
