Atmos Energy Corporation is a natural gas distributor headquartered in Dallas, Texas. It serves approximately three million customers across more than 1,400 communities in nine states, ranging from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Rocky Mountains. It is one of the largest natural-gas-only distributors in the United States.

1906: Beginnings in Texas

In 1906, the history of Atmos Energy Corporation began in the Panhandle of Texas.

1981: Incorporation as a Gas Distributor

In 1981, the company was incorporated and became a fully regulated natural-gas-only distributor.

1983: Energas Spin-off

In 1983, Energas, the natural gas distribution division of Pioneer, was spun off and became an independent, publicly held natural gas distribution company.

October 1988: Name Change to Atmos Energy Corporation

In October 1988, Energas changed its corporate name to Atmos Energy Corporation, and its stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "ATO".

2000: Sale of Gaffney Operations

In 2000, Atmos sold the Gaffney, South Carolina operations of United Cities Gas to Piedmont Natural Gas.

October 2004: Acquisition of TXU Gas Company

In October 2004, Atmos Energy acquired the distribution and pipeline operations of TXU Gas Company.

2012: Sale of Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and Georgia Operations

In 2012, Atmos sold its Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and Georgia operations to Liberty Utilities.
