Chicago Park District

The Chicago Park District is a large and old park district in the US, encompassing over 600 parks, beaches, harbors, conservatories, a zoo, museums, and a stadium. It has over 230 field houses, 78 pools, and numerous sports facilities with year-round programming. It owns Soldier Field, leased by the Chicago Bears and Chicago Fire FC. It's an independent taxing authority and a separate agency from the City of Chicago, with headquarters in Brighton Park.

1934: Creation of the Chicago Park District

In 1934, the Illinois Legislature created the current Chicago Park District under the Park Consolidation Act, consolidating 22 separate park districts in Chicago, including the Lincoln Park, West Park, and South Park Districts.

1938: Construction began on headquarters

In 1938, construction began on the Chicago Park District's headquarters, which was designed by Holabird & Root.

1939: Headquarters construction complete

In 1939, construction ended on the Chicago Park District's headquarters.

1968: First Special Olympics

It also had over 230 field houses, 78 public pools, and numerous sports and recreational facilities, offering year-round programming. Soldier Field, the lakefront stadium, was leased to the Chicago Bears and Chicago Fire FC.
