Erik Spoelstra, also known as "Coach Spo," is the head coach of the Miami Heat and an assistant coach for the United States men's national basketball team. He's considered one of the best NBA coaches, having led the Heat to two NBA championships. Spoelstra is the first Asian American head coach in major North American sports history, and the first Asian American to win an NBA title as a head coach.
On November 1, 1970, Erik Jon Spoelstra was born. He is an American professional basketball coach, currently the head coach for the Miami Heat of the NBA.
In 1989, Erik Spoelstra was named West Coast Conference (WCC) freshman of the year while playing basketball at the University of Portland.
In 1990, during a WCC basketball tournament game against Loyola Marymount, Erik Spoelstra was on the court near Hank Gathers when Gathers collapsed and died due to a heart condition.
In 1992, Erik Spoelstra graduated from the University of Portland with a major in communications.
In 1993, Erik Spoelstra played in Germany for two years (1993-1995) in Basketball Bundesliga's second division as a player–assistant coach for TuS Herten.

In 2004, Erik Spoelstra, as an assistant coach, was credited for improving Heat star shooting guard Dwyane Wade's balance and jump shot after Wade's return from the 2004 Summer Olympics.
In 2006, Erik Spoelstra won his first NBA championship as an assistant coach when the Miami Heat defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals.
In April 2008, Erik Spoelstra was named the head coach of the Miami Heat, succeeding Pat Riley. He became the first Asian American head coach in the NBA and in the history of the four major North American sports leagues.

On April 28, 2021, Erik Spoelstra earned his 600th win as the Heat's head coach and became the sixth head coach in NBA history to win 600 games with one team.
On February 6, 2022, Erik Spoelstra was named as the Eastern Conference head coach for the 2022 NBA All-Star Game.
During the 2022–23 season, Erik Spoelstra coached the 8-seed Heat to the 2023 NBA Finals, his sixth appearance as head coach, but lost the series to the Denver Nuggets in five games.
On March 13, 2023, Erik Spoelstra won his 697th game, ranking him 20th on the all-time wins list among NBA head coaches.
