Iceberg lettuce

Iceberg lettuce, scientifically known as Lactuca sativa, is a popular cultivar characterized by its crisp, tightly packed, pale-green leaves. It is widely recognized for its mild flavor and high water content, making it a staple in salads, sandwiches, and burgers. Developed in the early 20th century, it was named 'Iceberg' because it was originally transported in crates covered with crushed ice to maintain its signature crunch and freshness during distribution. While nutritionally less dense than darker, leafy greens like kale or spinach, iceberg lettuce remains a global favorite due to its affordability, long shelf life, and distinct texture. It is a hardy crop that thrives in cooler climates and serves as a versatile culinary base, providing a refreshing, watery crunch that balances richer toppings and dressings.
