Jakob Chychrun is a professional ice hockey defenseman of American-Canadian nationality, currently playing for the Washington Capitals in the NHL. He was drafted 16th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in 2016. He also played for the Ottawa Senators before joining the Capitals.
Jakob Chychrun became the first Coyotes rookie defenseman since 2005–06 to score as many points, which was also the third highest by a rookie defenseman in team history.
In 2013, Chychrun was drafted by the Youngstown Phantoms in the USHL draft but was denied a special exemption to play junior hockey at 15 years old. Consequently, he played for the Toronto Jr. Canadiens.
In 2014, Jakob Chychrun competed with Team Ontario at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge, scoring four points in five games. He was the first minor midget player to play for Team Ontario at the tournament.
In 2015, Jakob Chychrun was selected first overall by the Sarnia Sting and played 12 games before a shoulder injury sidelined him for eight weeks, including the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
On July 30, 2016, Jakob Chychrun concluded his OHL career and signed a three-year, NHL entry-level contract with the Arizona Coyotes.
On October 15, 2016, Jakob Chychrun made his NHL debut with the Coyotes, becoming the third-youngest player to skate for the franchise. He also recorded his first NHL point, an assist, in the same game.
On October 20, 2016, Jakob Chychrun scored his first NHL goal against Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens.

In 2017, Jakob Chychrun underwent knee surgery during the off-season, was assigned to the Tucson Roadrunners for conditioning in November, and made his season debut in December, scoring a goal for the Coyotes.
In 2018, Jakob Chychrun underwent surgery to repair his torn ACL and signed a six-year contract extension with the Coyotes prior to his season debut on November 13.
By 2019, Jakob Chychrun tied his career high with 20 points through 53 games as the Coyotes failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs.
For the second time in his NHL career, Jakob Chychrun was named to the Coyotes' opening night roster for the 2019–20 season.
In 2020, Jakob Chychrun made his NHL postseason debut, helping the Coyotes sweep the Nashville Predators in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers before being eliminated by the Colorado Avalanche.
In 2020, Jakob Chychrun was named to the Coyotes opening night roster for the second straight season. He later scored his first career hat trick on April 4.
On March 1, 2023, Jakob Chychrun was traded by the Coyotes to the Ottawa Senators.
On July 1, 2024, Jakob Chychrun was traded from the Ottawa Senators to the Washington Capitals.
As part of the trade to the Ottawa Senators, the Coyotes received a conditional second-round pick in the 2024 NHL entry draft.
On March 25, 2025, Jakob Chychrun agreed to an eight-year contract extension with the Capitals, carrying an average annual value of $9 million.
