José Fernández Madrid was a significant Neogranadine figure, serving as President of the United Provinces of New Granada during a tumultuous period in the early 19th century. Trained as a medical doctor and scientist, he also contributed as a writer. His political career faced a setback with the Spanish reconquest, leading to exile in Havana, where he continued his scientific pursuits and medical practice. Pardoned later, he returned to Colombia and held diplomatic posts, including ambassador to France and the United Kingdom, where he passed away in 1830.
On 22 July 1950, the Colombian Armed Forces established the Order of Health Merit Jose Fernandez Madrid to honor José Fernández Madrid. This award recognizes members of the Military Medical Corps and other military personnel for acts of courage, distinguished service, or outstanding contributions to science, military medicine, or medical instruction and investigation.
