Leonidas I

Leonidas I was a Spartan king of the Agiad dynasty, ascending to the throne around 489 BC. He is renowned for his leadership during the Second Persian War, particularly his command at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. Leading a small force of Spartans and other Greek soldiers, he bravely defended the pass against the much larger Persian army, led by Xerxes I. Though ultimately defeated, Leonidas's courageous stand allowed the other Greek forces to prepare for the final confrontation, playing a crucial role in the eventual Greek victory. His sacrifice at Thermopylae became a symbol of courage, duty, and resistance against overwhelming odds.
