In 2021 at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., McDonald beat 2015 champion, Kei Nishikori, in three sets to reach his first ATP final.
On June 16, 2016, after the NCAA tournament, McDonald announced that he would not return to UCLA for his senior year, but instead turn professional.

As a result of reaching the final at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., McDonald returned to the top 100 for the first time in 2 years, climbing to world No. 64 on August 9, 2021.

In October 2022, McDonald won his maiden doubles title at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships partnering with Marcelo Melo. As a result, he reached a new career-high doubles ranking of No. 96.
McDonald started his 2022 season at the Melbourne Summer Set 1. At the Australian Open, he lost in the second round to Aslan Karatsev.
In August 2023, McDonald reached his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal at the National Bank Open, upsetting Andrey Rublev and Milos Raonic before losing to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. As a result, he reached a new career-high ranking in the top 40 of world No. 39 on August 21, 2023.
