Marshalls is a large American chain of discount department stores owned by TJX Companies. They have over 1,000 stores in the US, called "Marshalls" or "Marshalls Mega Store", in 49 US states and Puerto Rico. Marshalls also has 61 stores in Canada, which they expanded into in 2011.
In 1956, Alfred Marshall and a group of entrepreneurs established Marshalls, initially focusing on the "Brand Names For Less" concept.
In 1960, Frank Estey and Bernard Ribas joined Marshalls by purchasing shares from Bernard Goldston. Additionally, Irving Blitt, after discovering an opportunity to purchase factory second Arrow shirts, introduced clothing to Marshalls' inventory.
Marshalls was acquired by Melville Corporation in 1976.
By 1993, Marshalls had expanded its operations to 42 states, including Hawaii, and had established multiple downtown locations.
In 1995, TJX, the parent company of Marshalls' main competitor, TJ Maxx, acquired Marshalls for $550 million.
In 2002, TJX, the parent company of Marshalls, reached a $100 million settlement in California to resolve an employee class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit alleged that Marshalls had misclassified employees to avoid paying overtime compensation as mandated by the Fair Labor Standards Act.
In March 2011, Marshalls opened its first stores in Canada, marking the company's expansion beyond the United States.
