On April 14, 2019, Nimari Burnett, along with teammates Devin Askew, Dawson Garcia, and Ethan Morton, won a gold medal at the USA 3x3 Under-18 Championship playing for Attack.
On November 12, 2019, Nimari Burnett committed to play college basketball for Texas Tech, choosing them over offers from Alabama, Oregon, Michigan, and others. He was ranked as the number 19 recruit by ESPN, making him the highest-ranked recruit in the program's history.
In 2019, Nimari Burnett represented the United States national 3x3 team and won the national team’s first gold medal at the FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. He scored 40 points in the tournament, the fifth-most overall. He also won a silver medal in the dunk contest.
In 2020, Nimari Burnett enrolled at Texas Tech University. During his freshman season he recorded a season-high 12 points against Grambling State.
On January 7, 2021, Nimari Burnett left Texas Tech for personal reasons. As a freshman, he averaged 5.3 points and 1.8 rebounds in 12 games.
On April 8, 2021, Nimari Burnett transferred to the University of Alabama to continue his college basketball career.
On March 30, 2023, Nimari Burnett transferred to the University of Michigan.
On April 30, 2024, Nimari Burnett announced that he would be staying in Ann Arbor for his fifth collegiate season under new head coach Dusty May.
On January 19, 2025, Vlad Goldin (Nimari Burnett's former roommate at Texas Tech) reached a 30 point milestone.
On February 27, 2025, Nimari Burnett scored a season-high 20 points against Rutgers and hit a deep three-point shot as time expired to win the game for the Wolverines.
On April 21, 2025, Nimari Burnett announced that he would return for his final season after being granted a sixth year of eligibility.
On February 5, 2026, Nimari Burnett posted a career-high 31 points, including a career-high 7 three-point shots, in a 110–69 victory against Penn State. This helped Michigan to a school record 21st win before a second loss.
