The Rapidan Dam, a concrete gravity dam built in 1908-1910, stands on the Blue Earth River near Rapidan, Minnesota. Owned by Blue Earth County, it generates hydroelectric power. North American Hydro operates the dam and its power plant under contract with the county. The dam is situated southwest of Mankato, Minnesota.
Construction on the Rapidan Dam began in 1908. It was built on the Blue Earth River to generate hydroelectric power.
After its completion, the Rapidan Dam became operational in 1910, marking the beginning of its hydroelectric power generation.
The Rapidan Dam was finished in 1910 and began generating hydroelectric power.
In 1970, ownership of the Rapidan Dam was transferred to Blue Earth County, who took over its operation.
Recognizing the deteriorating state of the Rapidan Dam, Blue Earth County commissioned two studies in 2021 to investigate potential solutions: repairing or removing the dam.
Between April and June 2022, Blue Earth County actively sought public input regarding the proposed options for the Rapidan Dam, aiming to understand community perspectives on repair versus removal.
On June 24, 2024, following heavy rainfall and flooding of the Blue Earth River, the Rapidan Dam suffered a catastrophic failure. The river breached the dam's sides, leading to widespread flooding and significant damage. An Xcel Energy substation was destroyed, cutting power to approximately 600 customers. Additionally, a store and another building were destroyed. The event prompted a flash flood warning and evacuations.
