The Rapidan Dam, a concrete gravity dam built in 1908-1910, stands on the Blue Earth River near Rapidan, Minnesota. Owned by Blue Earth County, it generates hydroelectric power. North American Hydro operates the dam and its power plant under contract with the county. The dam is situated southwest of Mankato, Minnesota.

1908: Construction of Rapidan Dam Begins

June 24, 2024: Rapidan Dam Failure and Flooding

On June 24, 2024, following heavy rainfall and flooding of the Blue Earth River, the Rapidan Dam suffered a catastrophic failure. The river breached the dam's sides, leading to widespread flooding and significant damage. An Xcel Energy substation was destroyed, cutting power to approximately 600 customers. Additionally, a store and another building were destroyed. The event prompted a flash flood warning and evacuations.
