Springfield model 1873

The Springfield Model 1873 was the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle adopted by the US Army. Produced in both full-length rifle and carbine forms, it saw extensive use in battles against Native Americans.

1983: Archaeological Excavations at Little Bighorn

In 1983, archaeological excavations at the Battle of the Little Bighorn site revealed that only a small percentage (3.4%) of cartridge cases showed signs of jamming, challenging initial assumptions about the role of jammed carbines in Custer's defeat. However, this percentage did not include cases cleared by cleaning rods or those removed from the immediate battle area. The investigation of jammed weapons was initiated after the defeat of Lieutenant-Colonel George Armstrong Custer's battalion in 1876.
