USA Basketball (USAB) is a non-profit organization that governs basketball in the United States. It represents the country in FIBA international competitions and oversees the men's and women's national teams for the Olympics and Paralympics. The organization is led by chairman of the board, retired General Martin Dempsey, and CEO Jim Tooley.
In 1974, the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America (ABAUSA) was founded.
On October 12, 1989, the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America (ABAUSA) was renamed to USA Basketball after FIBA rule changes allowed NBA players to compete internationally.

In 2007, the University of Northern Iowa represented the United States in basketball.
The University of Kansas represented the United States in basketball at the 2015 World University Games.
In 2017, Purdue University represented the United States in basketball at the World University Games.
The University of Maryland represented the United States in basketball in 2017.
In 2018, the University of Louisville represented the United States in basketball.
The 2018 FIBA Basketball World Cup was rescheduled to 2019.
In 2019, Mississippi State University represented the United States in basketball.

The 2020 U17 World Championship and the 2020 U18 Americas Championship were both cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2020 Olympics were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2022 Youth Olympics were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2021 Summer World University Games were postponed to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the United States qualified but decided not to participate in the 2023 Pan American Games.
