Washoe County School District

The Washoe County School District (WCSD) is the second largest public school district in Nevada, serving approximately 64,000 students across 96 schools. WCSD provides education to all areas within Washoe County, including Reno, Sparks, Verdi, Incline Village, Sun Valley, and Gerlach.

2000: Natchez Enrollment

March 14, 2006: Pine Middle School Shooting

On March 14, 2006, a school shooting occurred at Pine Middle School. The perpetrator, James Scott Newman, a 14-year-old student, shot and injured two eighth-grade classmates with a .38-caliber revolver.

March 25, 2008: Jencie Fagan receives Above & Beyond Citizen Honor

On March 25, 2008, athletics teacher Jencie Fagan was honored with the Above & Beyond Citizen Honor from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society in Washington, D.C. for her heroic actions during the school shooting.

2016: Natchez Enrollment remains constant

As of 2016, Natchez enrollment remained at the same level as in 2000.

2017: Natchez School Renovations and Staffing Changes

In 2017, Natchez school underwent extensive renovations during the summer, costing $1.5 million. In 2017, the school also had a new principal and newly hired teachers after struggling with academic performance historically.

July 1, 2024: Joe Ernst assumes Superintendent role

On July 1, 2024, Joe Ernst officially began his tenure as the Superintendent of the Washoe County School District, replacing Dr. Susan Enfield.
