The water buffalo, also known as the domestic, Asian, or Asiatic water buffalo, is a large bovine originating from the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is now also found in Italy, the Balkans, Australia, North and South America, and parts of Africa. There are two recognized types of water buffalo: the river buffalo, primarily found in the Indian subcontinent and westward to the Balkans, Egypt, and Italy, and the swamp buffalo, ranging from Assam through Southeast Asia to the Yangtze Valley of China.
