A closer look at the defining struggles that shaped Aroldis Chapman's life and career.
Aroldis Chapman, nicknamed "the Cuban Missile", is a Cuban-born American professional baseball relief pitcher currently playing for the Boston Red Sox. Known for his exceptionally high fastball velocity, Chapman has also played for the Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, and Pittsburgh Pirates, as well as Holguín in the Cuban National Series. A left-handed pitcher, he is a member of the 300 save club and holds the record for all-time strikeouts among left-handed relievers.
In the spring of 2008, after a failed attempt to defect, Chapman met with Cuban president Raúl Castro and was given a conditional reprieve, including a suspension for the remainder of the National Series season and exclusion from the 2008 Summer Olympics.
In Game 2 of the 2010 NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies, Chapman received his first career postseason loss after allowing three unearned runs.
On March 19, 2014, during a spring training game, Chapman was struck in the head by a line drive, resulting in a skull fracture and requiring surgery.
On October 30, 2015, Aroldis Chapman was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend in Davie, Florida. He was accused of physical assault and discharging a firearm. Although no charges were filed due to inconsistencies in reports, MLB investigated the incident, leading to a suspension.
On December 7, 2015, news reports revealed Aroldis Chapman's alleged involvement in a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend in Davie, Florida, which had occurred on October 30, 2015. This led to a halt in a pending trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, as MLB initiated an investigation. The Reds later traded Chapman to the New York Yankees.
On May 14, 2017, Aroldis Chapman was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to rotator cuff inflammation in his left shoulder.
On July 11, 2020, it was reported that Aroldis Chapman had tested positive for COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
