Borderlands 4 is an upcoming action role-playing first-person looter shooter video game, a sequel to Borderlands 3, and the fifth mainline entry in the Borderlands series. In 2019, Borderlands 3, the predecessor to Borderlands 4, was released.
2019: Development Started Before Borderlands 3 Release
Prior to the release of Borderlands 3 in 2019, Gearbox Software had already begun working on Borderlands 4. The design of the planet Kairos was intended to be a "seamless" playable space with no loading screens, and the game was intended to be more open and free than its predecessors.
March 2024: Take-Two Interactive Acquired Gearbox
In March 2024, following its acquisition of Gearbox from Embracer Group, Take-Two Interactive confirmed that a new title in the Borderlands series was in development.
August 2024: Borderlands 4 Officially Revealed
In August 2024, publisher 2K officially revealed Borderlands 4 and released its first gameplay footage at The Game Awards 2024.

On April 29, 2025, Randy Pitchford announced that Borderlands 4 would release ahead of schedule on September 12 due to progress on the game.
