Chaminade University of Honolulu

Chaminade University of Honolulu, established in 1955 by the Society of Mary, is a private Marianist university located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Situated in Kaimuki at the base of St. Louis Heights, Chaminade offers 23 bachelor's degrees and 5 master's programs. It holds accreditation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission.

1955: Saint Louis Junior College Opens

In 1955, Saint Louis Junior College was established, marking the beginning of the institution that would later become Chaminade University of Honolulu.

1955: Chaminade University Founded

In 1955, the Society of Mary founded Chaminade University of Honolulu in Kaimuki, Hawaii. The university is located at the base of St. Louis Heights.

1957: Name Change to Chaminade College

In 1957, Saint Louis Junior College became a four-year institution and changed its name to Chaminade College.

1977: Name Change to Chaminade University of Honolulu

In 1977, Chaminade College added graduate programs and subsequently changed its name to Chaminade University of Honolulu.

1982: Victory Against Virginia Cavaliers

In 1982, Chaminade University’s basketball team, the Silverswords, achieved a notable victory by defeating the top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers with a score of 77–72. This upset is considered one of the greatest in college basketball history.

1984: Inaugural Maui Invitational Basketball Tournament

In 1984, the annual Maui Invitational basketball tournament was initiated, partly inspired by the Silverswords' historic 1982 victory over Virginia.

2003: Campus Renovation and Construction

In 2003, Chaminade University's campus underwent extensive renovation and construction after receiving a large grant. This included the construction of the Sullivan Family Library, and the Dr. Lawrence K.W. and Mrs. BoHing Chan Tseu Center for Nursing Education.

2006: Addition of Sports Teams

In the fall of 2006, Chaminade University added men's and women's soccer teams, as well as a women's basketball team, to its athletic program.
