Chicago P.D. is a police procedural TV series, part of the Chicago franchise, focusing on the uniformed officers and the Intelligence Unit of Chicago's 21st District. Led by Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), the team tackles major street crimes, navigating complex cases and ethical dilemmas. The series explores the personal and professional lives of the officers as they strive to maintain justice in a challenging urban environment. The ensemble cast includes Jon Seda, Sophia Bush, Jesse Lee Soffer, Patrick Flueger, Marina Squerciati, and LaRoyce Hawkins among others. Since its premiere in 2014, the show has offered a gritty portrayal of law enforcement in Chicago.

On May 12, 2016, NBC gave Chicago Justice a series order after discussions with Dick Wolf about a fourth series in the Chicago franchise centered on the legal system. Chicago Justice was a spin-off of Chicago P.D. by introducing Assistant State's Attorney (ASA) characters in the 21st episode of P.D.'s third season.
In May 2017, it was announced that Bush would depart the series Chicago P.D. after four seasons.
In July 2017, after Chicago Justice's cancellation, it was announced that Seda would move back to Chicago P.D. as a series regular for season five, and Tracy Spiridakos was promoted to series regular as Det. Hailey Upton after a three-episode guest stint in season four.
In November 2017, it came to light that Sophia Bush had left the show Chicago P.D. because of Beghe's behavior behind the scenes, leading NBC to open an investigation.
On November 21, 2017, Deadline reported that Beghe was investigated for behavior that was considered overly aggressive. Beghe released a statement in which he admitted to engaging in aggressive behavior and apologized for it.
On September 25, 2019, the seventh season of Chicago P.D. premiered. Gwen Sigan was also promoted to showrunner and signed an overall deal with Universal Television.
On March 13, 2020, Universal Television production of the seventh season of Chicago P.D. was shut down due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
