In 2023, as a freshman, Dillon Thieneman was named a starting safety. In his debut game, he made ten tackles and an interception, earning Big Ten Conference freshman of the week honors. He recorded another interception the following week against Virginia Tech. Later in the season, following a game against Iowa, he was named Big Ten freshman of the week for the second time.
