Donovan Clingan is an American professional basketball player currently with the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA. He gained prominence playing college basketball for the UConn Huskies, where he secured two consecutive national championships in 2023 and 2024. His college success has translated into a professional career.
On February 23, 2004, Donovan John Clingan was born. He would later become an American professional basketball player.
In March 2018, Donovan Clingan's mother, Stacey Clingan, died of breast cancer. She also played basketball at Bristol Central, setting school records before playing at the University of Maine.
On July 2, 2021, Donovan Clingan committed to playing college basketball for UConn, choosing them over offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Georgetown, Syracuse, Providence, and Rutgers.
In 2022, Donovan Clingan led Bristol Central High School's boys basketball team to a Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Division II state championship.
On December 20, 2023, Donovan Clingan suffered a foot injury in a game against Seton Hall.
In 2023, Donovan Clingan scored four points with three rebounds, a block and two steals in the national championship game as the UConn Huskies won 76–59. He was also named to the Big East Conference All-Freshman team at the end of the regular season. Although he was considered to be a likely selection in the 2023 NBA draft, he decided to return to UConn for his sophomore season.
On January 17, 2024, Donovan Clingan returned from a foot injury, scoring six points and grabbing five rebounds in 16 minutes of play in a 62–48 win over 18th-ranked Creighton.
On April 12, 2024, Donovan Clingan declared for the 2024 NBA draft, forgoing his remaining college eligibility.
On June 26, 2024, Donovan Clingan was selected with the seventh overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2024 NBA Draft. Because his college number 32 was retired by the Trail Blazers for Bill Walton, Clingan chose 23 as his jersey number. On July 4, he signed with Portland.
On October 23, 2024, Donovan Clingan made his NBA debut in a 140–104 loss to the Golden State Warriors.
